5 Ways Microdosing Can Support Psychedelic Integration
Have you experienced a psychedelic journey that blessed you with powerful insights, downloads of knowledge, or nuggets of ultimate truths? As profound and enlightening as these experiences can be, they rarely result in spontaneous healing or life changes. Real, lasting transformation most often comes from the process of psychedelic integration—the practice of intentionally incorporating the insights, emotions, and attitudes that emerged during a psychedelic experience into your daily life.
Without a focus on integration, it’s easy to get off track with harnessing the lessons learned. After a few days, weeks, or months, the psychedelic journey loses its powerful potential for change and becomes nothing more than a novel experience to be shared over dinner table conversation.
Whether your psychedelic experience was two days ago, two weeks ago, or two years ago, a focused, intentional microdosing practice can help you bridge the gap between the new insights and perspectives and lasting positive change. Here’s how:
- Quiet Down the Default Mode Network
The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a group of interconnected brain regions associated with introspective thinking. In a sense, it’s where the ego resides. It’s the part of your brain that makes sense of where and how you fit in with the world around you, ruminates about the past, and worries about the future. The DMN has been shown to be overactive in people suffering from depression and anxiety. In high-dose psychedelic journeys, the DMN is often quieted down or even dismantled and put back together in a way that enlightens you with new perspectives, insights, or understandings of life.
But, the DMN is a protector. The ‘ego’ doesn’t necessarily like getting shaken up. After all, it has helped you survive— even if you haven’t thrived— so far! It’s often quite happy to go back to its original configuration and just stay there, even if it’s not the best thing for us. Even with the best intentions to live by your new insights, the DMN might try not to let you do that, and so you gradually retreat back into the quiet dissatisfaction you knew before.
An intentional microdosing practice can support integration by keeping the DMN in its new configuration or quieting it down again if your experience was a while ago, giving you the ability to work with your psychedelic-enhanced new perspectives and insights and to embody them for lasting positive change. Imagine microdosing as a way to gently maintain a subdued DMN, fostering a mindset conducive to openness and creativity.
- Keep Open or Re-Open New Neural Pathways
Psychedelics have been shown to promote neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to new experiences. During a psychedelic experience, the brain is in a state of heightened neuroplasticity, forming new neural pathways that allow for openness of thoughts, new perspectives, creativity, compassion, interconnectedness, and more.
This window of neuroplasticity generally lasts for a few weeks after a significant psychedelic experience. Introducing microdosing can extend and enhance the openness and flexibility of thought. Even if your psychedelic journey was months or years ago, microdosing can help re-open neural pathways from your past experience. Picture microdosing as a way to extend and reinforce the neuroplastic changes initiated during a larger dose experience.
- Enhance Self-Connection
One of the greatest benefits of psychedelics is their tendency to strengthen our connection to ourselves. In a high-dose journey, you may learn to love yourself more, feel increased compassion toward yourself, and gain clarity on what you need to bring into your life—or let go of—to be truly fulfilled. While these insights may be fleeting, taking action to embody them can be challenging, but microdosing can help.
One of the “magical” elements of microdosing is its tendency to tune us into our intuition and help us listen to our ‘gut instincts.’ Consequently, we intuitively make healthier choices, and these choices support and sustain the self-connection experienced in a high-dose journey. Envision microdosing as a tool and motivation for making choices aligned with self-love.
- Balance Heart and Mind
During high-dose psychedelic journeys, many people experience a heightened sense of emotional openness and vulnerability. The heart, metaphorically representing emotions and empathy, plays a prominent role as you connect with your feelings, often experiencing a profound sense of love and compassion. At the same time, your mind undergoes a state of expanded consciousness, allowing you to break free from routine thought patterns and limitations. The transformative potential of a psychedelic journey often lies in the harmonious fusion of heart and mind.
Microdosing, with its subtle effects, can act as an extension of this emotional resonance. While gently amplifying heart-centered qualities, microdosing contributes to creative and adaptable thinking, keeping the heart and mind in balance.
- Provide Focus and Motivation
It can be challenging to stay focused and maintain your motivation for integration, even when you know it is a critical element for lasting positive transformation. Sometimes, the thoughts and insights from your psychedelic journey may be overwhelming or confusing, and you don’t even know where to start with integration. Microdosing can help.
Microdosing has been shown to help people stick to single solutions and ideas rather than spiraling into a mess of confusing thoughts. Incorporating an intentional Microdosing practice into your integration can help you stay on track and focused on turning insights into action and embodiment. Additionally, the subtle, transformational benefits of Microdosing can keep you motivated to continue with self-exploration, growth, and healing initiated by your high-dose experience.
If you have recently experienced a psychedelic journey or are still integrating a journey that may have occurred some time ago, consider intentional Microdosing as a powerful ally in bridging the gap between insights and embodiment for sustainable positive transformation.
