What Strain of Magic Mushrooms Should I Choose?

The straight answer on picking the best magic mushroom strain and why it matters less than almost everyone tells you.

7 min read

Short answer: less than you might think.

We sell a range of strains and we describe them on our product pages, so we have an obvious interest in the descriptions, but here is the honest version anyway.

To start, almost all magic mushrooms for sale are the same species, called Psilocybe cubensis. Within that species are lots of strains. Think of a Honeycrisp apple versus a McIntosh, still apples, but a different character.

The takeaways

  • Nearly every "strain" on the market is the same species: Psilocybe cubensis.
  • No study has ever compared matched doses of two cubensis strains the effects are tied to psilocybin, dose, set and setting, not to strain names.
  • Chemical differences between varieties are real but unmeasured, so treat strain descriptions as impressions, not facts.
  • Dose, mindset and environment will shape your trip far more than which variety you pick.

Long Answer:

Do magic mushroom strains actually matter?

Nobody has run a study giving people matched doses of two cubensis strains and measuring the difference in what they experienced. The scientific literature ties psychedelic outcomes to psilocybin as a compound, and to dose, mindset, setting and support. It does not tie them to strain names.

What exists instead is decades of accumulated community reports, cultivator lore, and vendor copy that has been quietly copying itself across the internet until repetition started to look like fact. Legal restrictions slowed formal research for a very long time, so most of what circulates came from underground cultivation communities rather than peer review.

The chemistry: what we hope testing will eventually show

None of this means the differences are imaginary. It means nobody has measured them properly yet, and we are genuinely hopeful that will change.

A mushroom is not just psilocybin. It contains a small family of related compounds, and their ratios genuinely do differ between varieties.

What's actually inside a magic mushroom
Psilocybin
The famous one but mostly a delivery molecule for what comes next.
Psilocin
What your body converts psilocybin into, and the compound doing most of the work at the receptor.
Baeocystin & norbaeocystin
Present in small, variable amounts; may be active in their own right.
Aeruginascin
May modulate how the experience feels while it's happening.
Beta-carbolines
May influence how quickly effects come on and how long they last.

Some of these may modulate how psilocybin behaves how quickly it comes on, how long it lasts, or how it feels while it is happening. So it is entirely plausible that one profile leans more visual, another more emotionally open, another more physically gentle or more suited to therapeutic work. That is exactly what people have been describing for decades. What is missing is the analytical work connecting a measured chemical profile to a measured experience. When that research arrives, and we hope it does, strain descriptions could stop being folklore and start being useful.

Where strain differences are on firmer ground

Species differences are real. Psilocybe natalensis is not a cubensis at all. Pan Cyan (Panaeolus cyanescens) is a different genus entirely. These are genuinely different organisms with different chemistry, and the differences between them stand on much firmer ground than the differences within cubensis.

Several magic mushroom strains laid side by side, showing how similar most cubensis varieties really look.

Cannabis went through this exact thing.

Indica and sativa were described with total confidence for decades. Indica for the body, sativa for the head. Then chemical testing became widespread and most of those stereotypes fell apart. The categories turned out to be much more about marketing and lineage than about what the plant actually did to you.

The part that's genuinely hard to untangle: expectation

Expectation is one of the most powerful forces in any psychedelic experience. What you believe is about to happen is part of your mindset going in, and mindset shapes the experience more than most people realise. So if you read that a particular strain is deeply spiritual and then you have a spiritual experience, the mushroom may have had rather less to do with it than your own anticipation did.

This is why accumulated anecdote cannot settle the question. Thousands of people reporting that Mazatapec feels ceremonial is exactly what you would expect to see whether the effect is pharmacological or whether everyone simply read the same description first.

So how should you choose a magic mushroom strain?

1

Hold the character descriptions loosely

They are worth something. Decades of consistent reports are not nothing, and they may reflect real differences in alkaloid ratios nobody has properly measured yet. But treat them as accumulated impressions rather than established facts.

2

Use expectation deliberately

If a description genuinely appeals to you, choosing that strain is not foolish, you are shaping your own mindset in the process. Just know that is what is happening. Trust your intuition.

3

Or run the opposite experiment

Take something without reading anything about it first, and see what actually shows up. You will learn more that way than from any product description, ours included.

What matters far more than strain: set and setting

Both terms get used loosely, so they are worth defining properly.

Set

Your mindset — what you carry in with you: your mood that day, your expectations, your intention, what is unresolved in your life, how rested you are, whether you feel safe in yourself. Psilocybin tends to amplify what is already present rather than introduce something new, which is why the state you arrive in matters so much.

Setting

Everything around you — the physical space, the light, the temperature, the music or the silence, indoors or out. It also includes the people: who is with you, whether you trust them, and whether someone is holding steady while you are not.

We would put both of these well above strain choice, and above small differences in dose. The same mushroom, at the same amount, will give one person a difficult afternoon and another a meaningful one depending almost entirely on these two things. Time spent preparing your mind and your room will do more for your experience than any amount of time spent choosing between varieties.

Why we're telling you this

Because we would rather you trusted us on the things that matter than believed us about everything.

Dose, setting, mindset and preparation will shape your experience far more than which variety you are holding. We would rather you put your attention there.

Magic mushroom strains: frequently asked questions

What is the best magic mushroom strain for beginners?

There's no measured "best" strain. That being said, we usually recommend people start with Golden Teacher.

Do different magic mushroom strains actually feel different?

Possibly, but it hasn't been measured. Varieties do differ in their ratios of psilocybin, psilocin and minor alkaloids, so real differences may exist. But expectation is so powerful in psychedelic experiences that anecdotes alone can't separate a true pharmacological effect from the effect of having read a description first.

Are all magic mushrooms the same species?

Nearly all cultivated magic mushrooms are Psilocybe cubensis. Different "strains" are varieties within that one species. Some products are genuinely different species — such as Psilocybe natalensis.

What matters more than choosing a strain?

Dose, set (your mindset) and setting (your environment and the people around you). The same mushroom at the same dose can produce a difficult afternoon or a meaningful one depending almost entirely on these. Preparing your mind and your space does more for your experience than choosing between varieties.
